Are gender blood tests accurate?

Yes — our early gender test is 99.9% accurate at 6 weeks gestation.

How an early blood test for gender works

If you’re pregnant, your bloodstream contains DNA from your unborn child alongside your own DNA.

If your blood sample contains male (XY) chromosomes, this means you’re going to have a boy.

If there are no male chromosomes present in your blood sample, it means you’re having a girl.

Find out your baby's gender in just six steps:

1. Schedule your appointment at the First Encounters Ultrasound clinic in Cardiff (how to find us).
2. When you arrive, complete your test consent declaration.
3. Have your blood taken by one of our trusted phlebotomists.
4. We send your blood sample to the lab.
5. The lab will analyse your blood sample using a test process called non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT).
6. The results of your DNA test will be emailed directly to you within 3 days of the lab receiving your blood sample.

Terms & Conditions for Early Gender DNA Tests

  1. Clients will be requested to sign a Consent Declaration upon arrival at the clinic.
  2. Forensic Genomics will communicate test results directly to the client via the email address provided on the Consent Declaration. The result will be displayed within an email attachment.
  3. In the event of incorrect / inconclusive results or a failed blood draw, the following policies apply:
    1. Incorrect gender result: a full refund is provided, however only after birth and when evidenced with a UK birth certificate and proof of gestation being a minimum of 6 weeks at time of blood draw.
    2. Inconclusive result: an inconclusive outcome would only occur when a test has been conducted earlier than the minimum 6 week criteria, or when a pregnancy is failing or has failed resulting in insufficient prevalence of cell free DNA. In these circumstances, a re-test would be available at a 50% discount; however, refunds are not provided for inconclusive results.
    3. Failed blood draws: a failed draw will be charged at £25 per event to account for phlebotomy fees and a replacement STRECK tube. If you are aware that providing blood samples can be difficult, we would urge you to reconsider proceeding with this elective test.
  4. First Encounters Ultrasound does not provide a complimentary ultrasound scan to verify the results of an early gender DNA test.

What is NIPT?

NIPT stands for non-invasive prenatal testing. It’s a test process that’s used to analyse cell-free foetal DNA.

NIPT is the method used to analyse your blood sample and determine whether you’re having a boy or a girl.

Beginning with a small blood sample, a centrifuge is used to separate plasma from the rest of the blood. The extracted cell-free foetal DNA (cffDNA) is then checked for Y chromosomes, which are only found in males.

A gender blood test is sensitive enough to find even a single Y chromosome in your blood sample, and the test is 99.9% accurate at just 6 weeks gestation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is the early gender blood test safe?
Yes, early gender blood tests are non-invasive prenatal tests that are safe for both you and your baby.
How long will I have to wait for my results?
You should receive your results via email within 3 days of the laboratory team receiving your blood sample.
Are the gender blood test results guaranteed to be accurate?
Yes, our gender blood tests offer 99.9% accuracy at 6 weeks gestation.
I’ve had a boy before. Will that affect the accuracy of my results?
No, this won't be a problem. Clinical studies show that foetal DNA clears out of the mother’s bloodstream within 2 days of birth.
I'm pregnant with twins. Can the early gender test confirm the sex of both babies?
If you're having identical twins, the early gender blood test works just the same as with a single foetus. If Y chromosomes are present in your blood sample, both babies will be boys; if there are no Y chromosomes, both babies will be girls. For fraternal (non-identical) twins, the presence of male DNA means that at least one baby is a boy, but we cannot determine whether the second baby is male or female. No male DNA means you’re only having girls. (This also applies for triplets, quads, etc.)
I take anticoagulant (‘blood-thinning’) medicines. Will this affect the accuracy of my results?
No blood thinners or other drugs are known to affect the accuracy of blood test gender reveals. The test only looks for the presence of Y chromosomes in your blood sample, and is highly accurate.
Can hormone disorders like PCOS affect the accuracy of the 6 week gender test results?
No. Our early gender blood tests are completely DNA-based and therefore not affected by hormones.
Will my privacy be protected?
First Encounters Ultrasound are committed to preserving your safety and privacy. Please be assured that:
  1. The lab only tests for the presence of male chromosomes in your blood sample. They will not collect any data about disease states or other health information.
  2. Your DNA sample will be disposed of by a professional chemical management company (in compliance with federal standards) once it has been analysed.
  3. We will never share your results with anyone other than the email address you provide.
